Repairing water damage to walls and ceilings.

I am often asked to repair walls and ceiling’s that have had water damages from leak’s here i will advise you on how to resolve the damage.

On a recent job this Spring i was asked to repair some peeling and cracking paint by the kitchen hob.

All the loose paint was scraped off. And all the cracks were ‘raked out’ (this gives filler something decent to grab onto). Then one coat of Zinsser Peel Stop water-borne primer was brushed onto the whole area, taking care to brush in all directions to make sure the primer got into all the tiny nooks and crannies. Peel Stop takes just a couple of hours to dry, so I could then fill any cracks and raised paint edges (I used Toupret Reboucheur – as it dries quickly and Toupret fillers are generally fantastic.)

Onto another job in the house for a couple of hours, then I carefully sanded the filler flat – taking care not to sand too hard and re-expose the edges I’d treated with Peel Stop and filler. A quick dust and two coats of the original kitchen paint and the job was done. Sanded, sealed, filled, sanded and top-coated.

Zinsser Cover Stain

A bathroom leak had made a huge water stain over the hallway ceiling. After covering the floor with drop-sheets, I then raked out the cracks and discovered part of the plaster was completely ruined, In other words a big hole appeared.

This photo was taken part-way through raking out. I filled the hole first with plasterboard, held down with water-based adhesive. I sanded the whole ceiling (using dust extraction as usual, so there was virtually no airborne dust) and filled the cracks and remaining holes with Toupret Le Reboucheur. Another few hours on another job (I had the sitting room to paint) and the filler was dry enough to sand. A quick vacuum of the whole ceiling and then two coats (an hour apart) of Zinsser Coverstain oil-based primer was applied with a foam roller. The advantage of the foam rollers is that they’re quick, they apply an even coat, you don’t get any bits from the roller stuck in the paint, and they’re cheap enough to leave to dry and chuck in the bin. Washing out oil-based paints from rollers is neither healthy, time-efficient or environmentally the best option due to the quantity of white spirits you’d need!

Once the coverstain was dried out i applied a full coat of flat ceiling paint.

Two jobs resolved and one very happy customer.

5 Things to think about when decorating a child’s bedroom

5 things to think about when decorating a childs bedroom

When decorating a childs bedroom there are a few things to think about, such as what colours to use, what the child is going to use the room for, is it going to be a dual purpose room for study and play? Or is it just a play area? Here are just five things to think about.

Bright and bold

Kids love bright and bold colours so reds, yellows, blues and oranges will keep the kids interested and make it a fun room to be in, especially if they are young. Don’t be afraid to use colour in a kids room, you can always change it at a later date when they get older and grow out of the current colour scheme.

Think tough

Kids being kids will make marks on the walls and paintwork so look out for wipeable emulsions and those that say they are tougher than normal, the same goes for woodwork. A good emulsion should allow you to remove any scuffs easily, if you are going to use wallpaper, find a scrubbable and washable paper so marks can be removed.

Murals and drawings

To make a room even more fun, you can add drawings or murals to a wall, or perhaps a decal of their favorite superhero? You could theme a room to what your child is interested in, such as animals, cars, or space, and the theme can be changed as they grow and tastes change. If you are an artist or know a friend who is one, you can have a scene painted onto the walls of over lining paper.

Storage

Kids have a lot of toys and games and you will need somewhere to store them all for when they have finished playing with them at the end of the day, so think of storage solutions, such as underbed storage, cupboards, shelves, and storage boxes. All of these things are relatively cheap to buy and will help keep your kids room clutter free, which will inturn make the task of cleaning just that little bit easier.

Study area

As your children gets older they will need a place to study and do their homework, so a desk will be vital and help them organise their stuff and have a quiet place to study and do their homework. These can be a stand alone desk bought as a flat pack that you assemble yourself, or a custom made one if you have a small or awkward area to fit a desk into. You can do it yourself by buying some wood and board from a DIY store if you are handy with your hands.

St.Andrew’s Weekend 3

Back to the St.Andrews Renovation project this weekend has been slow moving due to the Christmas Holidays and the builders being off.

The plan this weekend is to remove the old wallpaper down the stairs, so as to let the plasterers skim the wall’s with plaster. However the hall and bedroom’s have wood chip on so will be a steam stripper job.

Will put photos up later of progress.
